Kynam (伽羅) or Kyara, is the rarest and most precious grade of agarwood in Japanese Kōdō. It is said that one requires three lifetimes of accumulated merit or virtue to have the opportunity to smell it. For this reason, it has long been treasured and collected by noble families and monks in Japan. Over time, such rare pieces occasionally pass down through generations, finding their way into private auctions or renowned incense houses such as Yamadamatsu Incense-wood (山田松香木店).
This particular collection is from a private auction house in Japan. Its previous owner was known as Baien or Plum Garden (梅園), a name that appears to have been used as a gō (雅号) or studio name. Although little is known behind the name, these pieces had clearly been preserved as part of a private collection before eventually returning to the market. In this way, it carries not only the fragrance of an exceptionally rare Kynam, but also a quiet trace of the generations of people who treasured it before us.
